Wow. An English born and based writer has taken out the prestigious Miles Franklin Award with her novel, “All The Birds, Singing”.
What makes this more noteworthy than usual is that Wyld beat top favourites Tim Winton and Richard Flanagan.
Contenders for the Australian literary prize either need to be Australian or the novel have an Australian flavour. Wyld was born to an Aussie mother and spent time in Australia but is essentially a Brit, even being named as a top British young writer. The book setting is based overseas although the main character is Australian.
“Birds” has been judged a worthy entry so expect a massive surge in book sales. It has been touted as a modern fable and a compelling read.
I am disappointed an iconic Australian award has not been conferred on an Aussie. I’m not sure Miles would be pleased either. Maybe reading the book will change my mind.
